ARO is a registered NGO (003-967-NPO), established in 1986 to relieve the suffering of animals living within indigent communities across the Cape Metropole.

They provide a welfare veterinary hospital service concentrating on a number of important areas of work including sterilisation and primary health care.

ARO is not a pet shelter, but is a welfare veterinary hospital service concentrating on a number of important areas of work including sterilisation and primary health care.

ARO’s fully equipped welfare hospital is run by a Senior Veterinarian and is registered with the SA Veterinary Council. Mobile clinics run by registered and experienced AWA’s (Animal Welfare Assistants) are sent daily into extremely poor and indigent communities including informal settlements.

Sterilisation is done at the ARO hospital in Schaapkraal. This remains the most effective method of preventing the suffering of animals and ARO currently sterilizes on average 200 animals per month.

Animals brought to mobile clinics by indigent owners will be booked into the hospital at no cost to their owners. ARO is not funded by the Government and has to raise approximately R7million annually by way of donations, gifts in kind, grants, legacies and special fundraising events. ARO also runs campaigns to raise public awareness on atrocities like live animal export, the suffering of circus animals and the donkey skin trade with China, as well as similar causes that require public pressure.

ARO is supported by Schmidhauser Electrical.
